Baby Face

One Giant Leap at a Time

Owen learned a new word over Christmas. Meemaw’s house is full of treats, and the word that started flying out of his mouth during our three day stay was, “COOKIE!” It seems that Owen’s cognitive development has taken a giant leap forward in the past few weeks and for as exciting and fun it is to see him making new advancements, I can’t help but want to slow things down just a little bit. Time seems to be flying by more and more quickly as he get older and makes these cognitive leaps and I really just want to stop time every once in awhile and really REALLY enjoy where we are right this minute before the next comes along and something new has happened in his world.

I have recently been just floored by the amount he understands. I said out loud, “I wonder where my phone is. It must be in my purse.” I went about clearing off the counter, and all of a sudden Owen came into the kitchen carrying my purse over his little shoulder, big grin on his face. He went and retrieved my purse from the foyer area where I had left it on the floor by the front door. I might be a bit of a sap, but I just about cried. I was amazed.

Today he came up to me, rubbing his eyes with a sour look on his face. I asked him if he wanted a nap, and off he went running for the bedroom, and tried to climb into my bed. We laid down for a little afternoon snooze, but I wondered when I had ever taught him the word “nap,” and how he was so adept at letting me know what he needs without using a single word.

We also have a new game. We now play the “I’m gonna get you!” game. Owen goes running, giggling as he goes, and I chase after him giving him a grand tickling when I finally catch him and swing him up into the air. Then I run and he “gets” me. There is something so sweet about having a game that we play together.

Owen has also shown a great interest in music. We did manage to take a music class together on Mondays, Heartsong Music Together. We had a great time singing and dancing, but the most of his musical lessons has come at home where his daddy and big brother spend a lot of free time playing guitars. Now, when he hears any sort of music, his right hand inevitably begins strumming the air and he’s the world’s youngest air guitarist. Then the bouncing in place starts and he grooves along. The Beatles are played a lot in our house and it seems that his favorites are Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Owen received two mini guitars for Christmas as well as a harmonica and a drum. He’s having a great time strumming his little plastic guitar and banging away on the drums.

Owen is growing and changing every day and it seems now that each day there are giant leaps forward. I miss having my little baby, but am so amazed by the progress I see him making on a daily basis. He is so sweet and caring, and I couldn’t be more proud of the little guy. I’m doing my best to take a ton of pictures and video and capture this time because it seems to be flying by more quickly than I am prepared for.

Little did I know that having a baby would turn my world upside down! Everyone told me it would, but I’m stubborn. I didn’t believe them, and you probably won’t believe me either until you’ve had your first!
