I am breastfeeding my 3 week old. I've read that normal feeding times are every 2-3 hours. Does the time start from start to start or from the time she finishes nursing to the start of the next feeding? Also, how much time at each breast is sufficient? She still shows signs of hunger after about 20 mins on each breast.
Congratulations on your new baby! Generally, we count the time between feedings from the start of one feeding to the start of the next feeding. Breastfed babies usually feed every 2-3 hours, but, this is just an average. Some feedings may be clustered, and others may be spread out, hopefully, during the night. If your baby has surpassed her birth weight, and continues to gain each week, breastfeeding is going well. I suggest not watching the clock, but watch your baby for signs of satisfaction. Allow baby to nurse on the first breast as long as she wants before offering the second. This is to ensure good hindmilk intake, the milk with significantly more fat and calories. Your 3 week old may also be going through a growth spurt, and feedings may be increased for a couple of days. Allow your baby to nurse whenever she wants. This will help increase your milk supply to meet your baby’s new needs.
