I have a 3 week old daughter who started nursing without a nipple shield for about 3 days now. When feeding she sometimes arches her back and takes herself off the breast even though she's still hungry. While I think it may be her just trying to become more familiar without the shield I was wondering if this could be reflux? Is there anything I should do or watch for further to help alleviate any discomfort she may be having? If it is reflux, what treatment, if any, is recommended?
While the possibility of reflux exists, you are right in thinking she just might need a little time to adjust to no nipple shield. If the arching is infrequent and not interfering with most feedings, then watchful waiting is ok. If the arching becomes more frequent, then a visit to your pediatrician would be prudent. They can better determine the nature of the arching and prescribe medication if needed. As always, good burping and keeping the little ones upright for 30 to 45 minutes after feedings can help. Baby gas drops can be used as well.
